Hi Kyo-san

Thanks!

I generally take notes of the speeches in English (because english is my 1st language and I can generally translate in my head Japanese->English much faster than English->Japanese) and if there are terms that are not easily translated I generally write it down in Japanese so I can look it up later. (Kaz Utsumi-san's japanese speeches are loaded with hard words so its a challenge ^_^; )

This generally works well but it is a bit of a challenge to juggle other roles (such as evaluator) and take notes at the same time.

yeah for the mixed bag translation I couldn't really think what would be a good translation.
“ちょっといまいちかな.” translates more into "well it could have worked out better" But I think I wanted to say it was a mix of good and bad. Know of any good totowaza for that?

It's great to see the bilingual minutes.
Great job, Kaz-san!

I was able to learn a lot from them.
I would like to ask the similar questions you did in the table topics session, in my club.
They sound very interesting.

Also it's good to learn how you translate.
It was interesting to see that "results are a little bit of a mixed bag" was translated to "ちょっといまいちかな." We can learn many expressions from both sides.

Cheers,
Kyo

Thanks All! definetly worth doing I think! Gives people out side of the club a chance to see how some of the speeches go. My only gripe is MR. Utsumi san's speeches in Japanese are very challenging to translate some times because they are so Japanese ^_^;!

Memo for Oct.16th

＊＊　Japanese session　＊＊＊

* Thought of the Day by Mayumi
Financial Crisis. How do you react.

* Speech
＃１　"Inspiration、Channeling " by Naoki

**　English Session

＊　Speech
＃１　”Plagiarism" by　Kei

Plagiarism is one of the biggest problem of Internet, especially in College.
Many students make their report by just copying and pasting phrases from internet.
That's plagiarism.
That is not only stealing the copyrights, but also students don't think about the topic,

However, some tools are available to identify if it's plagiarism or not.
If you're a student, be careful to do plagiarism. Teachers will know with these tools.
If you're a teacher, the tool is available to check easily.

#2 "California Initiative" by Kaz Utsumi
California Initiative was started at 1911.
Many other states have similar one.

There are many propositions in California.
 Proposition1 High Speed railway bond
 Proposition2 Confining farm animals
 Proposition3 Children hospital bond
 Proposition4 Parental abortion
 ..
 ..

Every time when voting, those propositions are the key for voting.
More discussion was taken at table topic.

#3 "What is leadership" by Chase
Principle of leadership.
Based on the book "On a becoming a leader".

With a demonstration, pushing a piece of string, pulling a piece of string.
Push people doesn't work. Pull/Lead people is only way to work.

What is leadership, what leader has.
Having a vision for the future.
Ability to inspire people
Ability to motivate people
Ability to pursuade people
and so on.

Only 8 people attended this week.
Jr. Kaz couldn't make it, so, I'll try to compile each speech this week. By Hiroshi

English:
Speech#1. "Water Rafting" by Katoko
Taking about her family's rafting trip in Colorado.
Her 9 year's grand childrens realized the basic living of human being, "eat/drink/sleep/eliminate" and nothing else.

Wow, that's fantastic experiment for them and for their grand mother seeing their growing.

Speech#2 "Today is the best of life" by Naoki
He has been trying a lot of things to improve his life. The earlier phases were good, he was enjoying it. But, the challenge has been getting big and big. And he started feeling the challenge was too much. One day, he got inspired... from god!? "Today is the best day of my life." That makes him more happier each day.

That a really good thinking! I'll use it for myself.

Japanese:
Speech#1 "Murakami Haruki no Miryoku" by Akemi
